Book Review: Locke & Key, Vol. 1: Welcome to Lovecraft

Locke & Key, Vol. 1: Welcome to Lovecraft by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodríguez is the first in a horror comic book series centred around a family struck by tragedy. The violent loss of their father leads to the Locke family moving to the Locke family house: Keyhouse in New England.

However, the mansion’s doors have transformative powers and little does the Locke family know that a dark force is watching them and the horrors have only just begun……

I’ve been wanting to read this comic series since I heard Stephen King talk about it (Joe Hill is actually Kings son!). I’m happy I finally found the first volume at the library and read it in one night.

The plot is incredible. The work and creativity that went into the story are evident in the inability to put it down. The art style matches the writing style perfectly but does not distract from the story telling.

I enjoyed the characters and the switch in POVs that were not jarring at all. I really liked the concept in general and I can’t wait to read the next volume!

In conclusion, if you like horror and comic books read Locke and Key.

Thanks for reading,
